Summary
GPT-5, developed by OpenAI, is a cutting-edge generative pre-trained transformer model that was officially released on August 7, 2025. Its launch, however, received a mixed reception, occurring within an intensely competitive AI landscape where it faces rivals like XAI's Grok 4 and Google's Gemini. This new large language model is a unified system designed for complex, multi-step workflows, offering state-of-the-art performance across various domains including coding, math, writing, health, and visual perception, and significantly reduces hallucinations. Its introduction further highlights broader discussions on the substantial energy implications of AI development, the resulting boom in data centers, and the geopolitical dynamics of the AI race between the US and China.

A generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) is a type of large language model (LLM) that is widely used in generative AI chatbots. GPTs are based on a deep learning architecture called the transformer. They are pre-trained on large data sets of unlabeled content, and able to generate novel content. OpenAI was the first to apply generative pre-training to the transformer architecture, introducing the GPT-1 model in 2018. The company has since released many bigger GPT models. The popular chatbot ChatGPT, released in late 2022, was followed by many competitor chatbots using their own "GPT" models to generate text, such as Gemini, DeepSeek or Claude. GPTs are primarily used to generate text, but can be trained to generate other kinds of data. For example, GPT-4o can process and generate text, images and audio. To improve performance on complex tasks, some GPTs, such as OpenAI o3, spend more time analyzing the problem before generating an output, and are called reasoning models.

- Introducing GPT-5 - OpenAI
GPT‑5 is a unified system with asmart, efficient model that answers most questions, a deeper reasoning model (GPT‑5 thinking) for harder problems, and a real‑time router that quickly decides which to use based on conversation type, complexity, tool needs, and your explicit intent (for example, if you say “think hard about this” in the prompt). The router is continuously trained on real signals, including when users switch models, preference rates for responses, and measured correctness, [...] We are introducing GPT‑5, our best AI system yet. GPT‑5 is a significant leap in intelligence over all our previous models, featuring state-of-the-art performance across coding, math, writing, health, visual perception, and more. It is a unified system that knows when to respond quickly and when to think longer to provide expert-level responses. GPT‑5 is available to all users, with Plus subscribers getting more usage, and Pro subscribers getting access to GPT‑5 pro, a version with extended [...] GPT‑5 is our strongest coding model to date. It shows particular improvements in complex front‑end generation and debugging larger repositories. It can often create beautiful and responsive websites, apps, and games with an eye for aesthetic sensibility in just one prompt, intuitively and tastefully turning ideas into reality. Early testers also noted its design choices, with a much better understanding of things like spacing, typography, and white space. See here for full details on what GPT‑5

[...] Once usage limits are reached, a mini version of each model handles remaining queries. In the near future, we plan to integrate these capabilities into a single [...] GPT-5 in the API is simpler: it’s available as three models—regular, mini and nano—which can each be run at one of four reasoning levels: minimal (a new level not previously available for other OpenAI reasoning models), low, medium or high. The models have an input limit of 272,000 tokens and an output limit (which includes invisible reasoning tokens) of 128,000 tokens. They support text and image for input, text only for output. [...] #### Key model characteristics # Let’s start with the fundamentals. GPT-5 in ChatGPT is a weird hybrid that switches between different models. Here’s what the system card says about that (my highlights in bold):
- Everything you should know about GPT-5 [August 2025] - Botpress
Released 08/07/2025, GPT-5 unifies advanced reasoning, multimodal input, and task execution into a single system, eliminating the need to switch between specialized models. GPT-5 is designed for complex, multi-step workflows. GPT-5 significantly reduces hallucinations compared to earlier versions. The variants of GPT-5 include: `gpt-5`, `gpt-5-mini`, `gpt-5-nano`, and `gpt-5-chat`. [...] In this guide, I’ll break down everything confirmed about GPT-5: its capabilities, performance upgrades, training process, release timeline, and cost. Build GPT Chatbots Build custom AI agents powered by LLMs Start now What is GPT-5? -------------- GPT-5 is OpenAI’s latest-generation large language model, officially released on August 7, 2025. It builds on the GPT architecture while integrating advancements from reasoning-first models like o1 and o3. [...] Over the past year, OpenAI introduced GPT-4o, o1, and o3, each improving how AI thinks, reasons, and interacts. These models made AI responses faster, more accurate, and more intuitive. But each was just a step toward something bigger. On August 6th, OpenAI announced — not-so-subtly — the imminent launch of GPT-5. And now, as of August 7, 2025, GPT-5 has officially arrived — bringing together OpenAI’s most advanced reasoning and multimodal capabilities in one unified model.

OpenAI has released its new LLM model, GPT-5. The generative AI model—which will be available to consumers for free and will power the latest version of the popular ChatGPT bot—is OpenAI’s “smartest, fastest, most useful model yet, with built-in thinking that puts expert-level intelligence in everyone’s hands,” the company noted on Thursday. [...] While previous versions of GPT had software coding capabilities, OpenAI says GPT-5 brings improved ease and sophistication to its “vibe coding” functionality, allowing users to “create beautiful and responsive websites, apps, and games” in a single prompt. Agentic capabilities ------------------------ [...] A better writer ------------------- According to OpenAI, GPT-5 is a much better writer than its predecessors, producing more “compelling, resonant writing with literary depth and rhythm.” The company provided side-by-side comparisons of GPT-5’s output versus that of GPT-4o for things like wedding toasts and poems. A better coder ------------------
