Summary

The MAGA movement is the political ideology and base associated with U.S. President Donald Trump, characterized by right-wing populism, antiglobalism, national conservatism, and neo-nationalism, often with illiberal and authoritarian leanings. It emerged during Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, deriving its name from his "Make America Great Again" slogan. The movement has become the dominant faction within the Republican Party, contrasting with "establishment" Republicans and inspiring the "Never Trump" opposition. It is also linked to initiatives like the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), spearheaded by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, which aims to reduce federal spending and regulation for a potential future Trump administration, drawing parallels to figures like Javier Milei and Milton Friedman, and communicating via platforms like X and the Doge Cast podcast.

Trumpism

Trumpism is the ideology of U.S. president Donald Trump and his political base. It is commonly used in close conjunction with the Make America Great Again (MAGA) and America First political movements. It comprises ideologies such as right-wing populism, right-wing antiglobalism, national conservatism, neo-nationalism, and features significant illiberal, authoritarian and at times autocratic beliefs. Trumpists and Trumpians are terms that refer to individuals exhibiting its characteristics. There is significant academic debate over the prevalence of neo-fascist elements of Trumpism. Trumpism has authoritarian leanings and is associated with the belief that the president is above the rule of law. It has been referred to as an American political variant of the far-right and the national-populist and neo-nationalist sentiment seen in multiple nations starting in the mid–late 2010s. Trump's political base has been compared to a cult of personality. Trump supporters became the largest faction of the United States Republican Party, with the remainder often characterized as "the elite", "the establishment", or "Republican in name only" (RINO) in contrast. In response to the rise of Trump, there has arisen a Never Trump movement.

The MAGA movement, often referred to simply as MAGA, or Make America Great Again, was founded on the belief that the United States was once a “great” country but has lost this status owing to foreign influence, both within its borders (via immigration and multiculturalism) and without (via globalization, or the increased integration of multiple national economies). MAGA members think that this fall from grace can be reversed through “America first” policies that would provide a greater degree [...] In addition to its political stances, the MAGA movement is known for its particularly combative character, which exemplifies the extreme partisanship of contemporary American politics. • The MAGA Ideology and the Trump Regime

The most extreme MAGA ideologues such as Bannon, Yarvin, and Anton are distinctly aware that the nationalist-populist MAGA movement is rooted in lower-middle class whites (whom the neofascist movement in both Europe and the United States is accustomed to referring to as “hobbits”), and only secondarily in privileged elements of the working class. MAGA think tanks often present a barely disguised contempt for the “lumpen,” “pitchfork-bearing proletariat,” or “proles,” namely the working class.56 [...] power to zero-out funds allocated by Congress, refused to comply fully with McConnell’s court order. The subsequent decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, which supported McConnell’s decision, pointed to a looming Constitutional crisis. Major figures in the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement have strategized in advance that the president can close down departments and impound congressionally authorized spending, while ignoring the courts, based on the sheer power of [...] The MAGA ideology that is now ensconced in the White House, and which has also spread to a considerable extent into the courts and Congress, has little to do with Trump himself, for whom it has served as a convenient weapon in his rise to power. Rather, its material basis is to be found in the growth of a larger neofascist movement, which, like all movements within the fascist genus, is rooted in a tenuous alliance between sections of the monopoly-capitalist ruling class at the top of society

  • The MAGA Theory: a Big Bang ? | Institut Montaigne

The MAGA movement which took over the Grand Old Party broadly consists of two main streams of advocates. On the one hand, the postliberal intellectuals led by Vance. On the other hand, the libertarian tech bros with Musk as the most prominent figure. These two streams share a common rejection and anger towards liberalism and democracy. They vowed to wage a culture war against individual freedom, division of power, checks and balances, pluralism and tolerance deemed responsible for all social [...] This time, the MAGA movement is much more ideologically driven than interest oriented. We are witnessing an outright attack on the principles of liberal, social, Christian, conservative or ecological democracy that have governed our societies for the past centuries. Making America Great Again is first and foremost a cultural project. It is a cult of force, a new version of the social Darwinism that has inspired totalitarian regimes in the last century. [...] The ideological underpinnings of the MAGA movement with regards to institutional setting, economic policy and international security stand at odds with European democratic values and principles such as checks and balances, plurality, multilateralism, long-term trust with allies and responsibility for the weak. By retracing this ideological genealogy of the MAGA project, we have keys to better understand the severity of current events.
