Summary
In November 2023, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, was unexpectedly fired by the company's board on November 16, with the public announcement made on November 17, due to a stated lack of confidence in his leadership and issues with candid communication. This decision triggered significant backlash from OpenAI employees and investors, leading to a dramatic five-day period of negotiations. Altman attributed his ousting to a cultural clash with the former OpenAI nonprofit board regarding the pace and methods for pursuing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Following intense pressure, an agreement in principle for his return was reached on November 22, and he was officially reinstated as CEO on November 29, accompanied by the formation of a new board.
