Summary

Mythos, also known as Claude Mythos, is an advanced large language model (LLM) developed by Anthropic that represents a significant leap in AI capabilities, particularly in reasoning, coding, and cybersecurity. Surpassing the performance of previous models like Claude Opus, Mythos gained notoriety for autonomously identifying critical, decades-old security vulnerabilities in foundational software including the Linux kernel, OpenBSD, and FFmpeg. Due to the potential danger posed by these capabilities, Anthropic made the decision to withhold the model from public release. This discovery led to the creation of Project Glass Wing, a 100-day cybersecurity coalition involving major tech firms such as Apple, Microsoft, and Google to patch the identified flaws. While evaluations by the AI Safety Institute (AISI) showed the model has a 73% success rate in expert-level Capture the Flag (CTF) tasks, its development has sparked a broader debate regarding the safety and control of technology as it approaches Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Myth

Myth is a genre of folklore consisting primarily of narratives that play a fundamental role in a society. For scholars, this is totally different from the ordinary sense of the term myth, meaning a belief that is not true, as the veracity of a piece of folklore is entirely irrelevant to determining whether it constitutes a myth. Myths are often endorsed by religious and secular authorities, and may be natural or supernatural in character. Many societies group their myths, legends, and history together, considering myths and legends to be factual accounts of their remote past. In particular, creation myths take place in a primordial age when the world had not achieved its later form. Origin myths explain how a society's customs, institutions, and taboos were established and sanctified. National myths are narratives about a nation's past that symbolize the nation's values. There is a complex relationship between recital of myths and the enactment of rituals.

  • What is Claude Mythos?

    ## What is Claude Mythos? Claude Mythos, developed by Anthropic, is a large language model (LLM). While it was trained to be a general-purpose model, it is particularly useful in completing cybersecurity-related tasks that involve multiple steps. It is also useful for assisting in software engineering, long-running agentic workflows, and industry research. According to Anthropic, Mythos's abilities in all these areas are "substantially beyond those of any model (they) have previously trained," including their current heavyweight model, Claude Opus. The company said Mythos's "powerful cybersecurity skills" were a happy accident of improving the model's coding and reasoning ability. [...] According to AISI's research, while Mythos was not significantly better at individual cybersecurity tasks compared to other models, it did complete difficult multistep infiltration challenges with a high level of frequency, including some that no other AI had completed to date. When it came to expert-level Capture the Flag tasks (CTF), AISI found Mythos Preview succeeded 73% of the time, shown below. Please set an alt value for this image... AISI’s ultimate conclusion was that Mythos would be good at exploiting systems with “poorly defended systems” and that real-world systems, unlike the testing conditions, had active defenders and defensive tooling that would make success far more difficult. [...] # What is Claude Mythos? Claude Mythos is a generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) model developed by Anthropic. It excels at completing complex, multi-step cybersecurity tasks.
