Summary

Apple silicon is a series of custom-designed system on a chip (SoC) and system in a package (SiP) processors developed by Apple Inc., primarily utilizing the ARM architecture. Designed to replace third-party processors like Intel's, Apple silicon enables deep vertical integration across Apple's hardware and software ecosystem, powering devices ranging from iPhones and iPads to Macs, Apple Watches, and the Apple Vision Pro. The transition to Apple silicon began with the Apple A4 chip in 2010 and culminated in the complete phasing out of Intel processors from the Mac lineup by June 2023. Under the leadership of CEO Tim Cook and Senior VP of Hardware Technologies Johny Srouji, Apple operates as a fabless designer, outsourcing the manufacturing of these highly efficient, unified-memory chips to contract foundries such as TSMC and Samsung.

Apple silicon

Apple silicon is a series of system on a chip (SoC) and system in a package (SiP) processors designed by Apple Inc., mainly using the ARM architecture. They are used in nearly all of the company's devices including Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Apple Watch, AirPods, AirTag, HomePod, and Apple Vision Pro. The first Apple-designed system-on-a-chip was the Apple A4, which was introduced in 2010 with the first-generation iPad and later used in the iPhone 4, fourth generation iPod Touch and second generation Apple TV. Apple announced the Macs' transition to its own chips at WWDC 2020, and began referring to its chips as Apple silicon. The first Macs with Apple silicon, built with the Apple M1 chip, were unveiled on November 10, 2020. The Mac lineup completed its transition to Apple chips in June 2023. Apple fully controls the integration of Apple silicon in the company's hardware and software products. Johny Srouji, the senior vice president for Apple's hardware technologies, is in charge of the silicon design. Apple is a fabless manufacturer; production of the chips is outsourced to contract foundries including TSMC and Samsung.

Apple Silicon doesn't refer to a specific chipset or processor but to the company's custom silicon as a whole. Its development lets the company focus on performance and vertical integration across platforms rather than needing to optimize software to work with another company's hardware. The custom processors developed by Apple have benefitted iPhone and iPad for years. The Mac began using them in 2020. Following more than a decade of chip architecture experience gleaned from developing the A-series processors, Apple prepared the way for Apple Silicon on Mac with macOS Big Sur, Mac Catalyst, and several other developer platforms. Its development lets the company focus on performance and vertical integration across platforms rather than needing to optimize software to work with another company's hardware. Apple Vision Pro (2025) 14-inch MacBook Pro (2025) MacBook Air (2026) M5 Pro and M5 Max were introduced in March 2026 in the MacBook Pro lineup. The remaining Macs waiting for the M5 processor may have a long wait due to memory and chip shortages. ## M4: Apple Intelligence at its core [...] The C1X was introduced with the iPhone Air and is also used in the iPad Pro with M5 and cellular. It is a power efficient modem that's also twice as fast as the C1. Vertical integration means that Apple has more control over how the iPhone and users interact with the modem. For example, iOS 26.3 introduces the limit precise location feature, which enables users to obfuscate the location data provided to carriers. ## The Apple Silicon Transition After the initial Apple Silicon announcement, Apple provided a Developer Transition Kit that developers could order using the "Universal App Quick Start Program." The DTK was a Mac mini running on an A12Z with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. Developers had to pay $500 to rent the machine, which they later had to return.

The MacBook Pro with Apple silicon is a line of Mac "Mac (computer)") notebook computers introduced in November 2020 by Apple. It is the higher-end model of the MacBook family, sitting above the consumer-focused MacBook Air, and is currently sold with 14-inch (360 mm) and 16-inch (410 mm) screens. All models use Apple-designed M series systems on a chip. The first MacBook Pro with Apple silicon, based on the Apple M1, was released in November 2020. [...] ## 13-inch with Touch Bar (2020–2022) On November 10, 2020, Apple introduced a 13-inch (330 mm) MacBook Pro with two Thunderbolt ports based on the Apple M1 system on a chip, launched alongside an updated MacBook Air and Mac Mini as the first Macs with Apple's new line of custom ARM-based Apple silicon chips. The M1 13-inch MacBook Pro is externally identical to the previous Intel model, with two ports and an aluminium case. It adds support for Wi-Fi 6, USB4, and 6K output to run the Pro Display XDR. The number of supported external displays was reduced to one, while the previous Intel-based models supported two 4K displays. The FaceTime camera remains 720p, but Apple advertises an improved image signal processor (ISP) that came with the M1 for higher quality video. [...] ## Software and operating systems The macOS operating system has been pre-installed on all Apple silicon MacBook Pro computers since release, starting with version macOS Big Sur, which is the first release of macOS that can run on Apple Silicon Macs. Asahi Linux can also be installed but Windows cannot be booted on them. Supported macOS releases
