Summary

Air Force One is the official air traffic control call sign for any United States Air Force aircraft carrying the President of the United States. While the term is often used as a metonym for the primary presidential aircraft—currently two highly customized Boeing 747-200B (VC-25A) jets—it technically applies to any USAF plane the President occupies. The organization responsible for its operation is the Presidential Airlift Group, a unit of the White House Military Office founded in 1944. These aircraft serve as mobile command centers, equipped with advanced secure communications, midair refueling capabilities, and hardening against electromagnetic pulses. The concept of dedicated presidential transport emerged during World War II with the 'Sacred Cow' in 1944, and the iconic blue-and-white livery was later introduced in 1962. Future upgrades include the transition to Boeing 747-8 (VC-25B) aircraft, which are expected to enter service in the late 2020s.

Air Force One

Air Force One is the official air traffic control-designated call sign for a United States Air Force aircraft carrying the president of the United States. The term is commonly used to denote U.S. Air Force aircraft modified and used to transport the president, and as a metonym for the primary presidential aircraft, VC-25, although it can be used to refer to any Air Force aircraft the president travels on. The idea of designating specific military aircraft to transport the president arose during World War II when military advisors in the Department of War were concerned about the risk of using commercial airlines for presidential travel. In 1944, the Douglas C-54 Skymaster was converted for use as the first purpose-built presidential aircraft. Dubbed the Sacred Cow and operated by the U.S. Army Air Force, it carried President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the Yalta Conference in February 1945 and was used for another two years by President Harry S. Truman. The "Air Force One" call sign was created in 1954, after a Lockheed Constellation carrying President Dwight D. Eisenhower entered the same airspace as a commercial airline flight using the same flight number. Since the introduction of SAM 26000 in 1962, the primary presidential aircraft has carried the distinctive livery designed by Raymond Loewy. Other aircraft designated as Air Force One have included another Lockheed Constellation, Columbine III; three Boeing 707s, introduced in the 1960s and 1970s; and the current Boeing VC-25As. Since 1990, the presidential fleet has consisted of two highly customized Boeing 747-200B (VC-25A) aircraft. The USAF has ordered two Boeing 747-8s to serve as the next presidential aircraft, designated VC-25Bs and expected to enter service no earlier than 2026. From time to time, presidents have invited other world leaders to travel with them on Air Force One. In 1973, President Richard Nixon invited Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev to fly with him to California from Washington, D.C. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan and Queen Elizabeth II toured the U.S. West Coast aboard the aircraft.

[...] # Air Force One The President of the United States must be ready to travel anywhere in the world on a moment’s notice. Fortunately, modern presidents have access to a variety of transportation options — including flying aboard Air Force One. Technically, “Air Force One” is used to designate any Air Force aircraft carrying the President, but it is now standard practice to use the term to refer to specific planes that are equipped to transport the Commander-in-Chief. Today, this name refers to one of two highly customized Boeing 747-200B series aircraft, which carry the tail codes 28000 and 29000. The Air Force designation for the aircraft is VC-25A. [...] Air Force One is maintained and operated by the Presidential Airlift Group, part of the White House Military Office. The Airlift Group was founded in 1944 as the Presidential Pilot Office at the direction of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. For the next 15 years, various propeller-driven aircraft served the President until President Dwight D. Eisenhower flew to Europe aboard VC-137A, a Boeing 707 Stratoliner, in August 1959. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy became the first President to fly in a jet specifically built for presidential use — a modified Boeing 707. Over the years, several other jet aircraft have been used, with the first of the current aircraft being delivered in 1990 during the administration of President George H.W. Bush. ### Subscribe to The White House newsletter

    ## A Symbol for the Future The new Air Force One represents more than just a technological upgrade. It is a flying symbol of American leadership and a testament to the nation's commitment to ensuring the presidency can function effectively and securely in an increasingly complex world. While the project has faced its share of challenges, from design debates to budget overruns and schedule delays, the end goal remains clear: to provide a modern, reliable, and capable aircraft for future presidents. [...] ## A New Era for the Flying White House The current Air Force One fleet consists of two heavily modified Boeing 747-200B aircraft, known by their military designation VC-25A. These planes entered service in 1990 and have since carried every U.S. president, logging millions of miles around the world. While they have been meticulously maintained and upgraded over the decades, the aircraft are approaching the end of their planned service life. Maintaining aging, four-engine jets has become increasingly expensive and challenging due to parts obsolescence and higher fuel consumption. [...] It is important to note that in 2025, the Trump administration accepted a Boeing 747-8 as a gift from Qatar. The administration plans to use it as a new Air Force One. In order for the aircraft to be used as Air Force One, it will have to undergo extensive modifications that will not be completed until after 2028. When the new Boeing 747-8s finally take to the skies with the call sign "Air Force One," they will carry forward a legacy that began with President Kennedy. These new planes will serve as a mobile White House for decades to come, enabling American presidents to lead from anywhere on the globe and continuing a powerful tradition of American air power and prestige. • Air Force One: A Timeline of Presidential Planes - History.com

Equipped with state-of-the art communication and security systems, the “flying White House” allows presidents to govern from 40,000 feet. While Air Force One is technically the air traffic control designation for any U.S. Air Force aircraft carrying the commander-in-chief, it is closely associated with the pair of jumbo jets that have become American icons. “Air Force One is a symbol of the projection of American power, an individual president’s character and personality and America's technological prowess,” says Kenneth T. Walsh, author of Air Force One: A History of the Presidents and Their Planes. Here’s a look at how presidential aircraft have evolved over the years. ### Presidential Fun Facts [...] Before a Boeing VC-137C airliner with tail number SAM 26000 entered service in October 1962, John F. Kennedy commissioned First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and industrial designer Raymond Loewy, creator of iconic designs such as the Coca-Cola bottle and U.S. Postal Service emblem, to develop a new Air Force One livery. The result was the iconic color scheme of white, silver, two shades of blue and the bold “United States of America” fuselage lettering in a Caslon typeface similar to that used for the first printed broadsides of the Declaration of Independence.
