Summary

Katie Porter is an American politician, lawyer, and law professor who served as a U.S. Representative from California from 2019 to 2025, representing the 45th and 47th congressional districts. A member of the Democratic Party, she gained national recognition for her sharp questioning during congressional hearings, often utilizing a whiteboard to hold corporate and government officials accountable. She has been a candidate for both the U.S. Senate in 2024 and the California gubernatorial election in 2026. In the context of the California governor's race, Porter surprisingly supported a flat tax model proposed by Republican rival Steve Hilton to eliminate state income taxes for individuals earning under $100K, despite general opposition from the establishment Democratic Party. Prior to her congressional career, Porter was a consumer advocate, a tenured law professor at the University of California, Irvine, and was appointed by then-Attorney General Kamala Harris as California's independent monitor of banks in a major mortgage settlement.
