CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute is a television special created by CNN to honor individuals who make extraordinary contributions to humanitarian aid and make a difference in their communities. The program was started in 2007. Since 2016, the program was hosted by Anderson Cooper and Kelly Ripa. Honorees are introduced during the fall of each year and the audience is encouraged to vote online for the CNN Hero of the Year. Ten recipients are honored and each receive US$10,000. The top recipient is chosen as the CNN Hero of the Year and receives an additional US$100,000 to continue their work. During the broadcast celebrating their achievements, the honorees are introduced by celebrities who actively support their charity work. To celebrate the 10th anniversary, the 2016 edition had an additional segment where five previous Hero of the Year winners were chosen as candidates for the Superhero of the Year award, which was decided with an online poll.

- How Scott Strode went from addiction to changing half a million lives
“Everybody is healing from something or has some anxiety or fear about being deserving and worthy of love and connection with others,” he said. “It’s bigger than just substances. People can use work, money, appearance, or social status to try and fill that void.” Strode co-founded The Phoenix to create a space for others to experience the connection and healing that gave him his life back. The Phoenix is a national sober active community with only one requirement: You must be 48 hours sober to participate. Phoenix members proudly wear the word “sober” across their chests. They’re reshaping the conversation around addiction and sobriety. [...] “Imagine you’re growing up experiencing childhood trauma,” said Strode. “Maybe you live in an unsafe community, and so you’re experiencing fear and trauma from that space. And then, because it’s often generational, you’ve lost one parent to substance use and the other to incarceration or mental health struggles. You feel pretty alone in the world.” “If we don’t interrupt the generational transmission of that pain, it’s really likely that your kids are going to come up in the same way. Even my stepfather and father — they have their own stories that led them to their path.” What Strode needed, and eventually found, were people who recognized his inherent worth. They didn’t see an addict. They saw a person. Scott Strode built an active sober community in recovery. As a child, Scott Strode blamed himself for, well, everything. Growing up in an emotionally turbulent home, he believed he deserved the negativity and abuse he experienced.

With the scaling of The Phoenix model well under way, Scott’s personal mission is to address the root cause of addiction by referring to ACEs. He has a dream of someday having a system that works in collaboration with probation, the criminal justice system, formal treatment, education and early childhood programs where everyone implements a trauma healing model to help interrupt the generational transmission of pain, thereby reducing the need for “numbing the pain” through SUD. The Phoenix network today is merely “the rails that will carry that load.” [...] In addition to scaling the culture of healing, Scott is increasingly focused on the challenges of the “wounded healer”. Scott believes that if we’re going to be leaders in the peer to peer models, we have to be leaders in how peers also receive support. Scott is working to lay the foundation of how staff and volunteers who engage in this emotionally difficult work of being a peer mentor are supported. [...] Scott has been in long term recovery from substance use disorder for 22 years. He had his first beer at the age of 11 and did cocaine for the first time when he was 15, shortly after getting out of a mental health facility for having suicidal thoughts. At the time, he thought he was broken beyond repair. He only understood years later that his substance use disorder was a way to numb the pain he experienced due to trauma from his childhood.
