Summary

4D Computing represents a paradigm shift in computational architecture, moving beyond traditional von Neumann systems and the limitations of Moore's Law. Inspired by neurobiology and mammalian brains, this approach utilizes dynamical systems theory to create physical circuits capable of emergent intelligent behavior, aiming to overcome the severe energy constraints currently facing AI development. Naveen Rao, co-founder and CEO of Unconventional AI, is a key proponent of this technology, having previously founded Nirvana Systems and worked on scaling Large Language Models at Data Bricks. Unconventional AI's open-source model, Uno, demonstrates the efficiency of 4D Computing by employing concepts like sparsity and analyzing oscillator state space trajectories to approach thermodynamic limits, pushing beyond the boundaries of traditional 2D lithography. This innovation is poised to unlock significant economic opportunities and enable widespread adoption of technologies like autonomous robotics.

    Four-dimensional space

Four-dimensional (4D) space is the mathematical extension of the concept of three-dimensional space (3D). Three-dimensional space is the simplest possible abstraction of the observation that one needs only three numbers, called dimensions, to describe the sizes or locations of objects in the everyday world. This concept of ordinary space is called Euclidean space because it corresponds to Euclid's geometry, which was originally abstracted from the spatial experiences of everyday life. Single locations in Euclidean 4D space can be given as vectors or 4-tuples, i.e., as ordered lists of numbers such as (x, y, z, w). For example, the volume of a rectangular box is found by measuring and multiplying its length, width, and height (often labeled as x, y, and z). It is only when such locations are linked together into more complicated shapes that the full richness and geometric complexity of 4D spaces emerge. A hint of that complexity can be seen in the accompanying 2D animation of one of the simplest possible regular 4D objects, the tesseract, which is analogous to the 3D cube.

4D (4th Dimension, or Silver Surfer, as it was known during early development) is a relational database management system and integrated development environment developed by Laurent Ribardière. 4D was created in 1984 and had a slightly delayed public release for Macintosh in 1987 with its own programming language. The 4D product line has since expanded to an SQL back-end, integrated compiler, integration of PHP, and several productivity plug-ins and interfaces. Some of the plug-ins created by 4D include 4D Write (a word processor), 4D View (somewhat like a spreadsheet, but with extra functionality) and 4D Internet Commands (which allowed for the addition of Internet-related functionality to a database). There are also over 100 third-party plugins, free and commercial. [...] Over the next few years 4th Dimension's installed base grew, and the publisher ACI established a US-based subsidiary called ACIUS, initially led by Guy Kawasaki. After 16 years of operating as ACIUS up to 2000, the name was officially changed to 4D Inc. In 1993, 4D Server v1.1, the client/server version of 4th Dimension was introduced along with the release of 4th Dimension v3.1. In 1995, 4D v3.5 went cross-platform and has since then supported both the Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh operating systems. In 1997, 4D v6 was the first version of 4D to contain a fully integrated web server, allowing developers to translate 4D forms into HTML on the fly using only the 4D language. [...] Silver Surfer, as it was known during early development, was developed by Laurent Ribardière in 1984. Following negotiations with Ribardiere it was planned that Apple Inc. (formerly Apple Computer Inc) would publish the software but Apple canceled the plan, reportedly due to pressure from other potential database publishers who claimed that if Apple had their own "brand" database, third-party products would be disadvantaged in the marketplace. Apple tried at the time to ensure well-known software publishers supported the Macintosh platform, and as a result the project reverted to Laurent Ribardière, who with the French businesswoman Marylene Delbourg-Delphis published 4th Dimension. Although independently published, Apple supported the new venture and used 4D extensively throughout the

The log file contains a record of all modifications since the last database backup. Entries describe the change that was performed as well as the user and time of the modification. The log also records when a user opens/closes the database. ## Parallel Execution(#citation29 "View Citation") 4D does not automatically utilize parallelism, but users can manually exploit parallelism by running multiple processes. • About the 4D Language | 4D Docs

The 4D language is not a traditional computer language. It is one of the most innovative and flexible languages available on a computer today. It is designed to work the way you do, and not the other way around. To use traditional languages, you must do extensive planning. In fact, planning is one of the major steps in development. 4D allows you to start using the language at any time and in any part of your project. You may start by adding a method to a form, then later add a few more methods. As your application becomes more sophisticated, you might add a project method controlled by a menu. You can use as little or as much of the language as you want. It is not “all or nothing,” as is the case with many other databases. [...] The flexibility and power of the 4D programming language make it the ideal tool for all levels of users and developers to accomplish a complete range of information management tasks. Novice users can quickly perform calculations. Experienced users without programming experience can customize their applications. Experienced developers can use this powerful programming language to add sophisticated features and capabilities to their applications, including file transfer, communications, monitoring. Developers with programming experience in other languages can add their own commands to the 4D language. ## What is a Language? [...] `QUERY` `QUERY([People];[People]Last Name="Smith")` The 4D language is very powerful—one command often replaces hundreds or even thousands of lines of code written in traditional computer languages. Surprisingly enough, with this power comes simplicity—commands have plain English names. For example, to perform a query, you use the `QUERY` command; to add a new record, you use the `ADD RECORD` command. `QUERY` `ADD RECORD` The language is designed for you to easily accomplish almost any task. Adding a record, sorting records, searching for data, and similar operations are specified with simple and direct commands. But the language can also control the serial ports, read disk documents, control sophisticated transaction processing, and much more.
