Summary

An SRO, or Self-Regulatory Organization, represents an entity that exercises regulatory authority over an industry, often serving as a middle ground between government oversight and complete deregulation. In the context of artificial intelligence, DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis proposed a framework for AI Regulation modeled after FINRA as an SRO, contrasting with more bureaucratic options. Additionally, SRO is a widely used acronym for Single-Room Occupancy (a low-cost housing option), Standing-Room Only (indicating fully booked venues), and various organizations such as the Saudi Railways Organization or SRO Motorsports Group.

  • Single-room occupancy - Wikipedia

Single-room occupancy (SRO) is a type of low-cost housing typically aimed at residents with low or minimal incomes, or single adults who like a minimalist lifestyle, who rent small, furnished single rooms with a bed, chair, and sometimes a small desk. SRO units are rented out as permanent or primary residence to individual occupants within a multi-tenant building in which tenants typically share a kitchen, and may share toilets or bathrooms. SRO units range from 7 to 13 square metres (80 to 140 ft2). In some instances, contemporary units may have a small refrigerator, microwave, or sink. [...] The term SRO refers to the fact that the tenant rents a single room, as opposed to a full flat (apartment). While roommates informally sharing an apartment may also have a bedroom and share a bathroom and kitchen, an SRO tenant leases the SRO unit individually. SRO units may be provided in a rooming house, apartment building, or in illegal conversions of private homes into many small SRO rooms. There is a variety of levels of quality, ranging from a "cubicle with a wire mesh ceiling", at the lowest end, to small hotel rooms or small studio apartments without bathrooms, at the higher end. They may also be referred to as "SRO hotels", which acknowledges that many of the buildings are old hotels that are in a poor state of repair and maintenance. The initialism SRO has also been stated to [...] SROs are a form of affordable housing, in some cases for formerly or otherwise homeless individuals. SRO units are the least expensive form of non-subsidized rental housing, with median rents even in New York City ranging from $450 to $705 per month in 2013. The term is primarily used in Canada and US. Since the 1970s and 1980s, there has been an increasing displacement of SRO units aimed at low-income earners in a process of gentrification, with SRO facilities being sold and turned into condominiums "Condominium (living space)"). Between 1955 and 2013, almost one million SRO units were eliminated in the US by regulation, conversion or demolition.

  • Standing-room only - Wikipedia

An event is described as standing-room only when it is so well-attended that all of the chairs in the venue are occupied, leaving only flat spaces of pavement or flooring for other attendees to stand, at least those spaces not restricted by occupancy by fire codes for ingress/egress of crowds. Some venues issue standing-room-only (or SRO) tickets for a reduced cost since it can become uncomfortable to stand through the course of an event. However, some fans prefer standing-room-only tickets, as the crowds that gather can be more active than people who are sitting down for much of the event.

  • Efficiency Housing and Single Room Occupancy (SRO) — Imagine Salem

City of Salem, Housing Road Map (2022). Click to expand. ## What is an SRO? From the Housing Road Map: “SRO housing is a residential property that includes multiple single room dwelling units. Each unit is for occupancy by a single eligible individual. There are a variety of types of SROs. The unit need not, but may, contain food preparation or sanitary facilities, or both.” They can be operated as transitional units or permanent housing. SROs are considered Naturally Occurring Affordable Housing, or NOAHs, given their limited size. They provide housing opportunities for people of limited economic means, including young people, older adults, and formerly homeless individuals. [...] There is mismatch in the City’s housing supply - according to the 2019 ACS, about 71 percent of Salem’s households are one- or two-person households, whereas only 24 percent of our housing units are studio or one-bedroom units. Additionally, around 48 percent of Salem households have low/moderate income (at or below 80 percent Area Median Income), many of which may qualify for affordable housing programs. These two aspects of the Salem community point toward a need for smaller, more affordable housing options. Single Room Occupancy (SRO) housing typology is a means of responding to that need. To that end, adopting zoning amendments to promote small efficiency units including Single Room Occupancy (SRO) housing is a strategy of our current Housing Road Map. [...] SROs are a vital housing option, particularly for persons transitioning out of homelessness, as their small size often means an affordable rent. Additionally, some SRO housing will offer supportive services to tenants, called “service-enriched” housing. What SROs look like for Salem will be determined via consultation with various city departments, current local operators and tenants of SRO housing, and a community engagement process. ## Is this a new use for Salem?
