Summary

Keller Rinaudo Cliffton is the co-founder and CEO of Zipline, a company he established in July 2011, which operates the world's largest drone delivery system. Under his leadership, Zipline designs, manufactures, and operates autonomous aircraft for delivering essential medical supplies like blood, vaccines, and infusions, and has expanded to include non-medical products through partnerships with companies such as Walmart, Chipotle, and Sweetgreen. Zipline's pioneering operations in Rwanda have been credited with a remarkable 51% reduction in maternal mortality, a statistic verified by the University of Pennsylvania. Cliffton has overseen Zipline's expansion into the United States, notably launching an instant delivery service in Dallas. He frames Zipline's mission within the global AI and robotics race, advocating for the use of American technology to benefit the world, drawing inspiration from the concept of an equitable society like Wakanda. Prior to Zipline, Cliffton was a scientist at Harvard University's Bauer Genomics Lab, where he built molecular automata and published research in Nature Biotechnology.

[...] On being comfortable with failure:“You have to get pretty comfortable with failure because basically, if you’re trying to do something really hard, you might spend a month or you might spend a year just trying again and again and again and failing again and again and again and again… So it really has to be more about the process. You have to derive the fulfillment from the process, not from the success.” This episode was recorded on May 8, 2023 [...] we’ve been pretending for a hundred years like that’s somehow unavoidable or excusable. We felt like it was neither of those things. So we were pretty determined. We felt like there was a chance to build a radically new kind of logistics system for Earth. We wanted to build the first logistics system that would serve all people equally.”

Whether it's electrical engineering, firmware engineering, software engineering, mechanical engineering, aero aerodynamics, aero acoustics, everything. And then we also have to be really good at operations. Like we have to know how to operate fulfillment centers. We have to ha know how to get regulatory approval in the countries where we operate. We have to know how to do flight operations, we have to do maintenance.
