- The Comedy Store Origins
In May 1979, Don Ward, (Founder, CEO and Executive Producer) opened The Comedy Store in the old Gargoyle Night Club in Dean Street, Soho. He had been inspired by a trip the previous year to see the new comedy clubs in New York and L.A. They were producing observational comedy and poking fun at the political scene and the Establishment. This was so refreshing and stimulating, his aim and dream was to re-create the same in London. As an ex-comedian and now a producer/owner he wanted to present [...] star”…………..” If your answer is ‘yes’ to that question, then contact us - The Comedy Store in Soho and become part of our Comedy Revolution - if you have the talent, we will help you to become a Comedy Star.” Auditions were held and a 150 people showed up! (YES, 150 people). The first person in the queue was Alexei Sayle, who presented as angry, at odds with everything of authority (if it didn’t make sense) and wonderfully against Maggie Thatcher & Co. He became the host for the shows for the [...] At the end of 1982, the lease of the club expired, the landlord offered Don the freehold of the whole building (69/70 Dean St) for the princely sum of £300K!!!! As he couldn’t find that kind of money (the bank manager said to Don - “…. how can the bank advance you that level of money on a business that just tells jokes?” The irony is that The Comedy Store became in a few years, a phenomenal success and spawned an industry that stretches everywhere in the UK. So here he was with a name and

- The Untold Story Of The Most Notorious House In Comedy History
In its early days, the Comedy Store was more a clubhouse for Sammy and fellow comics like Shecky Greene and Jackie Vernon. But The Tonight Show’s move west brought in a newer generation — Robert Klein, George Carlin, David Brenner. When, in 1973, a set at the Store by young then-unknown Freddie Prinze won him a spot on The Tonight Show, it was a signal of comedy’s tectonic shift from New York to L.A. — and of the beginning of the Store’s rise. [...] In 1976, when Mitzi Shore, the Comedy Store’s owner and enigmatic doyen (and mother of Pauly), bought the club, Cresthill, as it came to be known, was rolled into the deal. From the front, the house looks kind of small, almost humble. The two largest bedrooms are on the street level, and it isn’t until you descend the staircase and walk toward the back of the house that the three-story, nearly 5,000-square-foot abode begins to reveal itself. The space widens and draws you toward its oddly [...] In the early ’70s, what little stand-up business there was revolved around two cities: Las Vegas and New York. But in April 1972, an old-school comic named Sammy Shore opened the Comedy Store in a 99-seat room in a building on Sunset Boulevard that had once housed the venerable Hollywood nightclub Ciro’s. In May, Johnny Carson decided to move The Tonight Show from New York to Burbank, California.
- Did you know The Comedy Store was originally Ciro's Night Club ...
Did you know The Comedy Store was originally Ciro’s Night Club back in the day? Ciro's opened January 1940 at 8433 Sunset. It’s had a few incarnations and a few base lifts in between. Ciro’s was old Hollywood glamour personified from its heyday in the 1940s - until the early 60s. Times were changin’ and when Ciro’s officially closed, it became Ciro’s le Disc, It’s Boss, and Spectrum 2000 which catered to the new youth culture music scene during the 1960s until the Comedy Store opened in 1972. [...] The day Lucille Ball died, the Comedy Store sign said "They needed a laugh in heaven. Goodbye, Lucy." Driving past it broke my little 8 year old heart. A vivid childhood memory for me. 30w 11 Jana Bee Certainly like the looks of the building better when it was Ciro’s. 30w 23 Michael McCulloch I went to the Comedy Club one night... back in the day. Jay Leno and Robin Williams crashed the party. Jay Leno (way before he was famous) was hilarious. Williams was very hyped up. 30w 2 [...] My friend Cliff went there one night in his convertible and he checked his coat and closed the place down and went he went to leave the only coat left was a fur coat. He took it and drove home and they called him the next day when some other boozer figured out his wife didn’t have her coat. Those were the good old days! I can see him rolling down Sunset wearing a fur coat with the top down. I miss that guy 30w 2 Boris Hamilton
