Summary

The search for the next Federal Reserve Chair involves a shortlist of candidates vetted by the Trump Administration to succeed Jerome Powell, whose term expires in May 2026. Key contenders include Kevin Hassett, Christopher Waller, Kevin Warsh, and Rick Rieder. These candidates are generally viewed as favoring a less interventionist monetary policy, similar to the era of Alan Greenspan, and are expected to address the administration's concerns regarding interest rates and the economic 'two-tiered' system created by previous quantitative easing policies. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been a primary figure in the selection process, maintaining a shortlist and critiquing the Federal Reserve's historical role in exacerbating inequality. While Michelle Bowman was initially mentioned as a candidate, she was confirmed as the Vice Chair for Supervision in June 2025 and was later reported to be out of the running for the Chair position.

Michelle White "Miki" Bowman (born May 25, 1971) is an American attorney who has served as a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors since 2018. She is the first person to fill the community bank seat on the board, a seat created by a 2015 law. Previously, Bowman was the Kansas banking commissioner, from January 2017 through November 2018. She also held senior staff positions at the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Department of Homeland Security during the George W. Bush administration. After seven years as a Federal Reserve board member, President Trump nominated Bowman to succeed Michael Barr as Vice Chair for Supervision of the board, a position a she was confirmed for in early June 2025. In that position, she launched a substantial deregulatory push of the U.S. banking sector.
