Summary

The Promise Mission is a lunar prospecting initiative by NASA, utilizing a radioisotope-powered rover constructed from spare parts of the Perseverance and Curiosity rovers currently on Mars. This mission is part of a broader strategy to accelerate lunar exploration and secure a technological edge in the emerging Space Race 2.0, which involves intense geopolitical competition, particularly with China and Russia's plans for a lunar base. NASA is fostering a robust Space Economy by partnering with commercial space companies and developing next-generation technologies, including nuclear power for deep space exploration and advanced launch vehicles. The Promise Mission specifically aims to advance lunar prospecting efforts.

    Family Promise

Family Promise (formerly National Interfaith Hospitality Network) is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the United States, founded by Karen Olson in 1988. Family Promise primarily serves families with children who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, with the mission of "help[ing] homeless and low-income families achieve sustainable independence through a community-based response." Family Promise organizes congregations, social service agencies and community members into volunteer coalitions called Affiliates that provide emergency shelter and wraparound services to homeless and at-risk families. The model of the core program emphasizes sustainability and relies on resources that are already available to the locales served. Though each Affiliate coordinates its own programming for transitional housing, case management, family mentoring, financial literacy classes and childcare, all receive staff training and program assistance from the national office. The national office of the organization is located in Summit, New Jersey, from where national staff develop new Affiliates and provide technical assistance to existing ones. Presently, Family Promise draws on the efforts of more than 180,000 active volunteers from both secular community organizations and a 6,000 congregation-strong interfaith coalition operating across more than 200 affiliates, in 42 U.S. states.

    • PROMISE: NASA’s Nuclear-Powered Lunar Rover Concept

The PROMISE (Polar Rover for Observation, Mapping, and In-Situ Exploration) mission concept relies on the Curiosity Mars rover mission’s testbed rover. Some elements of the Perseverance Mars testbed rover shown in this video could be used as well. As exact duplicates of Curiosity and Perseverance, the testbed rovers are equipped with flight-proven engineering systems capable of carrying technology as well as science instruments that would advance Moon Base efforts. With a radioisotope thermal generator on board as a constant source of heat and power, PROMISE could operate without the need for solar power in the Moon’s frigid permanently shadowed regions, where water ice, a potential resource for astronauts, is likely to be found.
