Summary
OKX, a prominent cryptocurrency and derivatives exchange, was founded by Star Xu in 2017 and is owned by Ok Group. Initially known as OKEx, it underwent a rebranding to OKX in January 2022. While its primary exchange services are based out of Seychelles and Bahamas-registered entities and are generally not available to US investors, the OKX brand is being leveraged in the US market through the rebranding of Okcoin, which offers Web3 services and serves US customers in 41 states. OKX maintains a global presence, serving millions of users across more than 100 countries, and provides a comprehensive suite of services including spot trading, derivatives, DeFi, lending, mining, and an NFT marketplace. Despite initially being headquartered in Beijing, OKX has officially withdrawn from the Chinese mainland market due to regulatory bans, although it reportedly continues to employ R&D staff in the region through third-party outsourcing. The exchange is recognized as a significant player in the crypto market, positioned as a potential competitor to traditional exchanges like Nasdaq, contingent on achieving greater regulatory clarity.
