Summary
Chase Lochmiller is the Co-founder, CEO, and Chairman of the board of directors at Crusoe, an AI infrastructure company he co-founded in January 2018. He is a prominent voice in the artificial intelligence sector, advocating for the concept of "Infrastructure of Intelligence," where data centers are reimagined as "AI factories." Under his leadership, Crusoe implements a vertically integrated AI infrastructure model, developing large-scale facilities in locations such as Texas to cater to the demands of hyperscalers. Lochmiller identifies the escalating energy consumption of AI as the primary bottleneck to its future growth, underscoring the necessity for significant new energy investments. Prior to Crusoe, he gained extensive experience in quantitative trading and algorithmic strategies at firms like Jump Trading Group, GETCO, KCG Holdings, Inc., and served as a General Partner at Polychain Capital. He holds a Master of Science in Computer Science with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence from Stanford University, and Bachelor of Science degrees in Physics and Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

A deer (pl.: deer) or true deer is a hoofed ruminant ungulate of the family Cervidae (informally the deer family). Cervidae is divided into subfamilies Cervinae (which includes, among others, muntjac, elk (wapiti), red deer, and fallow deer) and Capreolinae (which includes, among others reindeer (caribou), white-tailed deer, roe deer, and moose). Male deer of almost all species (except the water deer), as well as female reindeer, grow and shed new antlers each year. These antlers are bony extensions of the skull and are often used for combat between males. The musk deer (Moschidae) of Asia and chevrotains (Tragulidae) of tropical African and Asian forests are separate families that are also in the ruminant clade Ruminantia; they are not especially closely related to Cervidae. Deer appear in art from Paleolithic cave paintings onwards, and they have played a role in mythology, religion, and literature throughout history, as well as in heraldry, such as red deer that appear in the coat of arms of Åland. Their economic importance includes the use of their meat as venison, their skins as soft, strong buckskin, and their antlers as handles for knives. Deer hunting has been a popular activity since the Middle Ages and remains a resource for many families today.

Each Stargate datacenter building will draw 100 megawatts of electricity, enough for a city of 100,000. Most of that power will come from the hundreds of 300-foot-tall wind turbines spinning in west Texas, which on most days generate far more electricity than the region needs. Windmill owners with a surplus sometimes even sell power into the grid at a loss, making it up by collecting federal green energy tax credits. “Not a great use of those electrons,” says Lochmiller, 38, who is working to [...] The datacenter buildings will include four data halls of 25 megawatts of compute each. Factories in Denver and Tulsa will manufacture server racks and install GPUs into skid-mounted units that are trucked to Abilene for installation. It’s far better to do this in a controlled environment than a dusty, noisy construction site, says Lochmiller; “You don’t want tradesmen stacked on top of each other.” [...] Lochmiller and Cavness, 37, went to high school together in Denver, spending weekends rock climbing. Lochmiller, 6-foot-1 with a shock of black hair, got into AI when he went to Stanford for grad school in 2013. He was struck by Professor Andrew Ng’s contention that “AI is the new electricity” soon to be just as widely distributed and relied upon by civilization. AI also consumes massive amounts of power, a truth Lochmiller experienced first hand when running up bills to power the stock
