Summary
"Main Street" is a metonym representing the primary retail and social hub of a village, town, or small city, serving as the focal point for commerce and "common" concerns. While prevalent in the United States, Canada, Ireland, and Scotland, it is often referred to as "High Street" in other parts of the United Kingdom. In economic discourse, the term is frequently contrasted with "Wall Street" to distinguish the interests of everyday citizens and small businesses from those of large financial institutions. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has identified a significant disconnect between these two spheres, citing high inflation and deficit spending as primary burdens on Main Street. The Trump Administration's economic strategy aims to revitalize Main Street by 2026 through industrial policies, tax cuts on tips and overtime, and the "Trump Accounts" initiative, which provides $1,000 to every child at birth to encourage long-term investment and financial literacy.

Main Street is a metonym used to denote a primary retail street of a village, town or small city in many parts of the world. It is usually a focal point for shops and retailers in the central business district, and is most often used in reference to retailing, socializing, and the place to go to find "common" concerns. The term is commonly used in Ireland, Scotland, the United States, and Canada, and less often in Australia and New Zealand. In the non-Scottish regions of the United Kingdom, the common description is High Street, though "Fore Street" or "Front Street" is commonplace in some parts. In Jamaica the term is Front Street. In the 1950s awareness about the 'main street' as a concept of its own importance emerged in the urban studies field, attaining the attention in the theoretical discussions of postmodern urban design, neo-traditional planning and meta-urbanism. In many places, the street name for such a street is actually "Main Street", though even where it isn't the actual name, "main street" is still used to describe the main thoroughfare of the central business district. The "Main Street of America" branding was used to promote U.S. Route 66 in its heyday.

- A Short History of the Idea of 'Main Street' in America
Main Street’s meaning could change quickly. In the 1920s, to invoke Main Street was to call up an image of the dullness of provincial life. By the 1930s, Main Street represented the bedrock of America’s embattled democracy. [...] If Main Street means anything today, it signifies an idealized space where American society can practice its highest values, which include civility, tolerance, and yes, commerce. And Main Street’s endurance, as an idea, demonstrates the authority of myth to nurture a sense of community, even in a society as fragmented as ours. [...] It is the self-consciousness of the idea of Main Street—from its origins in a Nathaniel Hawthorne sketch of New England, to Walt Disney’s construction of a Main Street USA, to the establishment of ersatz Main Streets in today’s urban malls—that makes it so essentially American. Main Street has been used in myriad ways to describe very many different things—from the crushing power of convention to the thrill of new entertainment, from the small town to new big city neighborhoods.
