In the first step, participants were randomly exposed to either two verified news articles (the factually accurate control conditions), two partially false articles (decontextualized), or two completely false articles (fabricated) on COVID-19 (connected to refugees entering Germany or the risk of contamination by runners). The factually accurate articles were taken from German news sources that actually verified all claims made in the articles. These verified news articles were altered and [...] deviated furthest from the truth. In this condition, the storyline completely deviated from the social distancing norms and accused the migrants of participating in illegal corona-parties: playing loud music and barbequing in the city while standing dangerously close to each other and other citizens. The migrants were thus accused of posing a threat to the native citizens of Germany. [...] For the partially false condition (decontextualization), facts about migrants entering Mannheim were taken out of context to reflect a different meaning: it was said that the social distancing rules could not be obeyed, and that the migrants were standing too close to each other when entering Mannheim. As the number of infections rose throughout Europe, on 26 February 2020 president Aleksandar Vučić called a press conference where he addressed the possibility of the virus impacting Serbia. This news conference made headlines after a pulmonologist, Dr. Branimir Nestorović, made joking statements about the virus, calling it "the most laughable virus in the history of mankind" and suggested that women should travel to then virus-affected Italy for shopping because "estrogen protects them". The clip went viral and received widespread criticism. His statements were refuted by Health Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah, who said "the practice of the Ministry of Health "Ministry of Health (Malaysia)"), whether for treatment or management, is based on evidence." The e-mail was sent to a prominent scientist (Jeremy Farrar) and discussed a phone call that Fauci had with a virologist (Kristian Andersen) discussing concerns about a lab leak.
