Summary
Vintage distortion, in the context of venture capital, refers to the poor performance of investment funds that were raised during the market bubble of 2021. This phenomenon was discussed on the All-In podcast as a significant factor contributing to current struggles in the venture capital market, alongside issues like a severe lack of liquidity and low cash returns (DPI). It specifically highlights the challenges faced by funds that deployed capital at inflated valuations during a period of market exuberance, leading to underperformance in subsequent years.

Distortion and overdrive are forms of audio signal processing used to alter the sound of amplified electric musical instruments, usually by increasing their gain, producing a "fuzzy", "growling", or "gritty" tone. Distortion is most commonly used with the electric guitar, but may be used with other instruments, such as electric bass, electric piano, synthesizer, and Hammond organ. Guitarists playing electric blues originally obtained an overdriven sound by turning up their vacuum tube-powered guitar amplifiers to high volumes, which caused the signal to distort. Other ways to produce distortion have been developed since the 1960s, such as distortion effect pedals. The growling tone of a distorted electric guitar is a key part of many genres, including blues and many rock music genres, notably hard rock, punk rock, hardcore punk, acid rock, grunge and heavy metal music, while the use of distorted bass has been essential in a genre of hip hop music and alternative hip hop known as "SoundCloud rap". The effects alter the instrument sound by clipping the signal (pushing it past its maximum, which shears off the peaks and troughs of the signal waves), adding sustain and harmonic and inharmonic overtones and leading to a compressed sound that is often described as "warm" and "dirty", depending on the type and intensity of distortion used. The terms distortion and overdrive are often used interchangeably; where a distinction is made, distortion is a more extreme version of the effect than overdrive. Fuzz is a particular form of extreme distortion originally created by guitarists using faulty equipment (such as a misaligned valve (tube); see below), which has been emulated since the 1960s by a number of "fuzzbox" effects pedals. Distortion, overdrive, and fuzz can be produced by effects pedals, rackmounts, pre-amplifiers, power amplifiers (a potentially speaker-blowing approach), speakers and (since the 2000s) by digital amplifier modeling devices and audio software. These effects are used with electric guitars, electric basses (fuzz bass), electronic keyboards, and more rarely as a special effect with vocals. While distortion is often created intentionally as a musical effect, musicians and sound engineers sometimes take steps to avoid distortion, particularly when using PA systems to amplify vocals or when playing back prerecorded music.

This had a really good distortion section where you could produce quite subtle and varied effects. I also got the PSP Vintage Warmer. I admit I didn’t quite “get” these devices. Subtle distortion effects don’t have that “in your face” effect like reverbs and echoes. Unless you turned them up to higher settings you sometimes couldn’t hear that they did much anyway. Audio distortion effects vintage warmer [...] ## Tip Here’s a good experiment if you are still sceptical or suspicious that subtle distorting or warming may harm your sound rather than enhance it. Record a few synthesiser tracks. Eight will be enough. Mix it down to a two-track master and record it to CD. Now run each of the tracks through something like a tape effect or something like the “Mix First Aid 1” preset from VintageWarmer if you have it. If you don’t, try a mild saturation from your DAW. Use something very subtle that you don’t [...] I noticed that when I switched to digital you could record 8 tracks and still have plenty of audio space left. The sounds weren’t as “big”. ## PSP Vintage Warmer Around this time I started to experiment with things like the Camel Audio Camelphat3.
- What is distortion in music? How to use it creatively in your productions
Finally, let’s use distortion to add some warmth and lo-fi character to our synths. Our synth part is nice but a little dull, and it’s lacking top-end. Let’s use BITE, a bitcrusher that can emulate the sound of vintage samplers. In a couple of quick moves, we can give our synth some teeth—and a pleasing lo-fi character, too. Adding a lo-fi effect with BITE This is how we’ll apply distortion on the synth: Here’s what that effect sounds like. [...] Tape saturation is the result of driving a hot signal into a (real or emulated) tape machine. In this case, the “saturation” occurs because the magnetic tape reaches its magnetic potential; it can’t hold any more amplitude. Vintage tape saturation in iZotope Ozone [...] Valve or tube saturation occurs when a vacuum tube (or valve) amplifier is overloaded. Such amplifiers were ubiquitous in the early decades of recording technology, meaning that—like tape —this form of saturation has an appealing “vintage” character. Its particular flavor is quite different from tape, though. It’s worth experimenting with both to learn their strengths and weaknesses. SUPERCHARGER GT is an example of a tube compressor with saturation capabilities as well.

Loopcloud can do a pretty good bitcrushing impression with Tonebox’s Hard Clip and Vintage 12 algorithms selected, then turning up the Drive, reducing the Gain, and increasing the Tone. ## Downsampling [...] Fuzz is a style of distortion that harks right back to early guitar amps, and in particular, broken ones. People discovered that the sound of a broken amp could actually sound pretty awesome, and fuzz pedals were soon created. Image by akd835 from Pixabay. [...] If you’ve been paying attention to recent music trends at all you’ll no doubt have noticed crunchy textures and raspy flavours plastered across everything from bass sounds to lead vocals. Grit is back in a big way, and producers around the globe are all reaching for that most misunderstood of audio tools – distortion. To the uninformed, distortion is either a negative consequence of pushing an audio signal too hard, or to blame for some of the questionable musical directions of the 80s.
