Summary
OpenView was a Boston-based venture capital firm founded in 2006 that specialized in expansion-stage business software and B2B SaaS companies. Managing approximately $2.4 billion in total assets, the firm was known for its focus on product-led growth and successful investments such as Datadog. In December 2023, the firm abruptly suspended new investments and laid off the majority of its staff following the departure of key partners, an event that triggered a 'keyman clause' in their fund agreements. This closure occurred during a broader period of market correction following the Zero Interest Rate Policy (ZIRP) era and has been cited by industry analysts as a notable example of the 'cleanup' occurring within the venture capital landscape during the transition from a SaaS recession toward recovery.

- OpenView Venture Partners stops investing, in surprise move - Axios
History: OpenView was founded in 2006, and counts Datadog as its biggest homerun. It fell short of target with Fund VII, but $570 million was still significantly more than it had ever raised. Behind the scenes: Sources say that at least one of OpenView's senior partners, Mackey Craven, no longer wanted to continue with Fund VII. This would have triggered a keyman clause, given the prior departure of partner Ricky Pelletier (who left in April). [...] But OpenView decided to preemptively suspend, and yesterday told LPs that the firm would provide a new strategic plan within three to six months. As for why top partners bailed, putting dozens of people out of work just before the holidays, sources remain hazy. But it sounds like a strategic/financial disagreement, not wrongdoing. The firm is declining to comment.
