Summary

OneWeb (now Eutelsat OneWeb) is a global communications company that operates a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation to deliver high-speed, low-latency broadband internet connectivity worldwide. Founded in 2012 as WorldVu by Greg Wyler, the company launched its first satellites in February 2019. After entering bankruptcy in March 2020, OneWeb emerged in November 2020 under a new ownership consortium including the UK Government, Bharti Global, and Eutelsat. In September 2023, OneWeb merged with Eutelsat to form Eutelsat OneWeb, operating as a subsidiary of the Eutelsat Group. Its satellites are manufactured through a joint venture with Airbus Defence and Space. OneWeb's network provides critical global data transport, serving as a key infrastructure alongside networks like Starlink.

Eutelsat OneWeb

Eutelsat OneWeb is a subsidiary of the French group Eutelsat providing broadband satellite Internet services in low Earth orbit (LEO). The company has offices in Paris (France), London (UK) and Virginia (US), and satellite manufacturing facilities in Florida and Toulouse – Airbus OneWeb Satellites – that is a joint venture with Airbus Defence and Space. The company was founded as WorldVu by Greg Wyler in 2012 and later, as OneWeb, launched its first six satellites in February 2019. It entered bankruptcy in March 2020 after failing to raise the required capital to complete the build and deployment of the remaining 90% of the network. The company emerged from the bankruptcy proceedings and reorganisation in November 2020 with a new ownership group. As of 2021, Indian multinational company Bharti Global, France-based satellite service provider Eutelsat and the Government of the United Kingdom were the company's largest shareholders, while Japan's SoftBank retained an equity holding of 12%. In March 2023, the number of satellites reached 618, enough to provide global coverage. In September 2023, Eutelsat announced the completion of its merger with OneWeb and the creation of a new Eutelsat Group company, with subsidiaries Eutelsat and Eutelsat OneWeb.

    ## Overview OneWeb is a commercial LEO satellite constellation operated by the Eutelsat Group, with satellites manufactured by Airbus. The project is supported by a consortium of international stakeholders and strategic partners. OneWeb was initially founded in 2012 under the name WorldVu Satellites Ltd., and it aims to provide reliable, high-speed broadband connectivity across the globe, particularly in areas that are currently underserved or entirely unconnected. The OneWeb system consists of a constellation of 648 mass-produced satellites in LEO, working in conjunction with a network of ground stations and user terminals. 1) 2) Figure 1: Representation of a OneWeb satellite in orbit (Image credit: Airbus) [...] The user terminals are compact and lightweight and designed for both fixed and mobile use. OneWeb’s main objective is to extend digital access to regions where conventional broadband solutions are either unavailable or economically impractical. This includes rural communities, mountainous terrain, and sparsely populated regions. OneWeb supports critical applications in both the public and private sectors, ranging from emergency response and public safety to education, healthcare, and industrial operations. In addition to acting as a primary broadband provider, OneWeb also delivers backup solutions for existing networks, supporting continuity in case of outages or high demand scenarios. • NEOM Tech & Digital Holding Company and OneWeb sign a JV

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – 26 October 2021: NEOM Tech & Digital Holding Company – the first holding company to be established as a subsidiary of NEOM – and OneWeb, the global communications network powered from space, have signed a $200 million (SAR 750m) joint venture agreement to bring high-speed satellite connectivity to NEOM, Saudi Arabia and the wider Middle East and neighboring East African countries. [...] UK Investment Minister Gerry Grimstone said: “This joint venture brings together two emerging space and digital technology champions to deliver connectivity for the Middle East. It demonstrates that the UK Government’s investment in OneWeb continues to be a catalyst for international collaboration, while securing jobs at home and driving investment into the UK space sector.” Mr Bradley said: “We aim to connect 100% of NEOM’s territory yet we must also preserve the natural environment. This is what drives us to innovate with partners such as OneWeb to create sustainable ways to accelerate human progress. The partnership has the potential to transform the way governments, businesses and communities connect to the internet.” [...] The partnership will see the deployment of OneWeb’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, which will not only provide the rapid and reliable connectivity to enable NEOM’s ecosystem of cognitive technologies, but also transform businesses and rural communities in the region where access to fiber-like internet was previously unimaginable. The agreement also includes a long-term strategic partnership regarding research and development of future connectivity systems.

OneWeb was one of the first LEO companies to throw its hat into the ring as it began looking for a manufacturer to build its fleet of satellites just as SpaceX was building its own satellite factory. It launched its first six satellites in February 2019, several months before Starlink launched its first operational satellites. ### Misfortunes and delays

  • Forrester’s Digest: Eutelsat to add 340 OneWeb satellites – SatNews

That €2 billion target is still some way off. This past trading year (the year to June 30th) saw OneWeb bring in €187 million (and grew 84.1 percent y-o-y). Usefully, OneWeb’s all-important backlog is at about €1 billion and Eutelsat’s expectation is for this current trading year will see OneWeb’s revenues rising by 50 per cent to €280 million. Jean-François Fallacher, CEO of Eutelsat, told analysts that for the current trading year (July 2025-June 2026) would see OneWeb’s LEO revenues grow impressively, noting: “This dynamic growth will compensate, but not yet outweigh the decline in GEO revenues, which are notably impacted by additional Russian sanctions in the Video Business.” [...] Skip to primary navigation Skip to primary sidebar Skip to secondary sidebar Skip to footer Satellite Industry Intelligence Since 1983 # Forrester’s Digest: Eutelsat to add 340 OneWeb satellites Paris-based satellite operator Eutelsat says it will add another 340 of its OneWeb satellites into orbit by 2029. These 340 will be additional to the 100 craft already on order. OneWeb, which Eutelsat merged with in September 2023 is very much coming into its own. OneWeb’s low Earth orbiting (LEO) fleet of 648 satellites was forecast at the time to grow to double-digit revenues over time and to reach €2 billion in annual revenues by 2027. [...] Eutelsat OneWeb is still missing a handful of ground station deployments, but these are expected to be in place by 2026 when a full global service will be possible. Eutelsat’s LEO projected growth is 28 per cent CAGR. Five more ground stations will be added to the existing 39 already in use. OneWeb is already approved for use in 180 countries/territories. Fallacher explained that while today’s focus was on maintaining the current OneWeb fleet the company is also wholly committed to the important IRIS2 v which will cost around €2 billion for a second Generation version of today’s OneWeb craft. ## Footer Satnews is a leading provider of satellite news, events, publications, research and other satellite industry information in both commercial and military enterprises worldwide.
