Summary

Adaptive learning, also known as adaptive teaching, is an educational methodology that uses computer algorithms and artificial intelligence to deliver customized resources and personalized learning pathways based on individual student performance and needs. Emerging in the 1970s from early intelligent tutoring research such as the SCHOLAR system, the field incorporates insights from computer science, psychometrics, psychology, and neuroscience. Adaptive learning has demonstrated high efficacy, with 86% of recent studies showing positive learning outcomes. In current educational discourse, adaptive learning powered by AI tutors is viewed as a scalable solution to the '2 Sigma Problem', though policies such as AI bans in K-12 school systems present challenges to its widespread adoption.

Adaptive learning

Adaptive learning, also known as adaptive teaching, is an educational method which uses computer algorithms as well as artificial intelligence to orchestrate the interaction with the learner and deliver customized resources and learning activities to address the unique needs of each learner. In professional learning contexts, individuals may "test out" of some training to ensure they engage with novel instruction. Computers adapt the presentation of educational material according to students' learning needs, as indicated by their responses to questions, tasks and experiences. The technology encompasses aspects derived from various fields of study including computer science, artificial intelligence, psychometrics, education, psychology, and brain science. Research conducted, particularly in educational settings within the United States, has demonstrated the efficacy of adaptive learning systems in promoting student learning. Among 37 recent studies that examined the effects of adaptive learning on learning outcomes, an overwhelming majority of 86% (32 studies) reported positive effects. Adaptive learning has been partially driven by a realization that tailored learning cannot be achieved on a large-scale using traditional, non-adaptive approaches. Adaptive learning systems endeavor to transform the learner from passive receptor of information to collaborator in the educational process. Adaptive learning systems' primary application is in education, but another popular application is business training. They have been designed as desktop computer applications, web applications, and are now being introduced into overall curricula.

[...] ## History [edit] Adaptive learning, or intelligent tutoring, emerged from the artificial intelligence movement and gained traction in the 1970s. It was widely believed that computers would eventually develop human-like adaptability in learning. Early efforts focused on creating systems that adjusted to users' learning styles, but adoption was limited by high costs, large system sizes, and ineffective user interfaces. The start of the work on adaptive and intelligent learning systems is usually traced back to the SCHOLAR system that offered adaptive learning for the topic of geography of South America. Several other adaptive learning systems followed within five years, with early developments documented in the book Intelligent Tutoring Systems. ## Technology and methodology [edit] [...] Adaptive learning has been partially driven by a realization that tailored learning cannot be achieved on a large-scale using traditional, non-adaptive approaches. • Adaptive Learning Overview

    # What is Adaptive Learning? next Adaptive learning is an educational approach in which learning is supported by computer algorithms that deliver customized resources and learning activities to address the unique needs of each learner. The concepts of a class or curriculum are linked to each other in a network. Concepts build as you move through a course. Learners and instructors are able to see clearly which areas they have mastered, and which require more support.

Adaptive learning is a technique to use data-driven instruction to adjust and tailor learning experiences to meet the individual needs of each student. Adaptive learning systems can track data such as student progress, engagement, and performance, and use the data to provide personalized learning experiences. [...] Adaptive learning may enable students to become more successful and self-directed by providing insight into their level of mastery and allowing them to work at their own pace. It potentially improves student engagement by providing lessons and activities that are tailored to their needs. It can be used as a cost-effective alternative to expensive textbooks. It provides a structure that keeps course objectives, lessons, practice activities, and assessments in alignment and shows students how each element of the course relates to the course objectives. Likewise, when students are having trouble mastering a concept, faculty can review if some instructional elements aren’t well aligned with the objectives. [...] ## Adaptive Learning & Assessment Adaptive learning is part of interactive learning which addresses the needs of individuals through learning pathways, effective feedback, and supplemental resources; as opposed to an one-size-fits-all curriculum (Kurt, 2021). Technology advancement makes adaptive learning easier to implement. There are three areas one can implement adaptive learning: adaptive content, adaptive sequence, and adaptive assessment.

Woman on laptop using adaptive learning Adaptive learning is a methodology for teaching and learning that strives to personalize lessons, readings, practice activities, and assessments for individual students based on their current skills and performance. [...] Adaptive learning software personalizes learning by using artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to “adapt” the learning path offered to an individual student in real time. Later, the data captured by adaptive learning software can be analyzed by faculty and administrators to review the needs of individual students or groups of students in a course. They can then adapt instruction to those needs during a term, and they can revise a course between terms. Similarly, students can use data about their skills and performance to adapt their learning practices. [...] Adaptive learning software often refers to the underlying technology or to a platform that multiple courses can be built on. Adaptive courseware often refers to a set of lessons and practice activities in a digital format for a single course using an underlying adaptive learning technology. Publishers of adaptive courseware on a given subject often develop a library of material, lessons, practice activities, and assessments that instructors can select, sequence, and customize for their particular course. Every Learner Everywhere® and its network partners believe adaptive learning has the potential to promote equity in higher education by improving course outcomes and lowering the cost of course materials, particularly for Black, Latino, Indigenous, and poverty-affected students.

    ## What Is Adaptive Learning? Adaptive learning in education is a form of learning where the student is first diagnosed, and then the program determines a learning pathway personalized to their individual needs. The elements of adaptive learning are consistent across all programs. Diagnostics determine where the starting point is for each student. There are different ways to assess what a student knows or doesn’t know: Have a student take a test upfront. Let an adaptive practice program assess students’ needs by starting them at a common point, and based on how they answer questions, determine over time what they need. Once the diagnostic has occurred, the system generates a personalized learning pathway for each student. This usually has two components:
