Royalty Pharma is a specialist biopharma-finance company that acquires royalty interests and provides royalty-based funding to universities, research hospitals, disease foundations, biotechnology companies, and pharmaceutical companies. Founded in 1996 by Pablo Legorreta and run from New York, with a U.K. plc domicile, Royalty Pharma sits between capital markets and the drug industry. It does not discover, manufacture, or market medicines itself. Instead, it buys rights to a portion of future sales from approved or late-stage therapies and then collects cash when partners commercialize those products globally. That makes its economics closer to specialty finance and intellectual-property investing than to a traditional pharmaceutical manufacturer. Its portfolio includes royalty interests [...] Acquisition of royalties on marketed medicines: This is the core business. Royalty Pharma buys rights to future cash flows tied to approved products with established commercial partners and observable sales trajectories. Acquisition of development-stage royalty rights: The company also invests in assets that are in clinical development or approaching launch, accepting more risk in exchange for potentially longer duration and stronger growth. Synthetic royalties and structured funding: Royalty Pharma can provide capital to biotech companies in exchange for a royalty-like economic interest, creating a non-dilutive financing tool for counterparties. [...] The main constraints are competition for attractive assets, patent-expiry timelines, clinical and regulatory risk on development-stage products, interest-rate sensitivity in valuation, and the possibility that a few large products continue to dominate cash flow for longer than management would prefer. ## 14. What Is the History of Royalty Pharma? Royalty Pharma was founded in 1996 by Pablo Legorreta to build a business around acquiring pharmaceutical royalty interests, a niche that was far less institutionalized at the time than it is today. Over the following decades, the company helped develop the market for monetizing royalties generated by academic research, biotechnology innovation, and pharmaceutical licensing.

Legorreta came to the idea of the company in the early 1990s when while working as a mergers banker at Lazard Frères, he saw a 1987 investment by wealthy clients of PaineWebber in a chemotherapy drug. From this, he realized that drug royalties held major potential. in 1996, he left Lazard and with Rory Riggs, a former PaineWebber banker, raised $60 million to start what would later become Royalty Pharma. Instead of making bets on early stage drug development, Royalty usually buys rights to royalties on regulator approved drugs or drugs that are promising. It buys rights from the patent holders, typically a predetermined percentage of revenue from the new drug after it enters the marketplace. The deal was the largest royalty purchase ever made by Royalty. According to The New York Times, at the time it was believed to be "the largest financial return ever achieved for a charitable organization pursuing treatments for disease." The deal raised money which the CFF will use to fund its efforts as part of a venture philanthropy model. The firm went public in June 2020. ## References [edit]
