Summary

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is an independent agency of the U.S. federal government, established by the Social Security Act of 1935. Initially known as the "Social Security Board," it adopted its current name in 1946 and became an independent agency again in 1995. Headquartered in Woodlawn, Maryland, the SSA administers the Social Security program, providing retirement, disability, and survivor benefits, and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program for low-income individuals. With approximately 60,000 employees and a vast network of offices, the agency projected to pay out $1.2 trillion in Social Security benefits and $61 billion in SSI benefits in fiscal year 2022. Its field offices reopened on April 7, 2022, after a two-year closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The SSA has recently faced scrutiny regarding its Enumeration Beyond Entry (EB) program, with Antonio Gracias alleging a dramatic increase in Social Security Numbers issued to non-citizens, which he linked to human trafficking and voter fraud.
