Summary

City Storage Systems (CSS), recently rebranded as Atoms, is a real estate redevelopment and food technology company led by CEO Travis Kalanick. After Kalanick invested approximately $150 million in the company in 2018, it operated largely in stealth mode for several years, building a massive infrastructure for the modern food economy. The company's vision, described as "digitizing the physical world," utilizes "Physical AI," automation, and autonomous robots to transform physical industries. Its portfolio includes CloudKitchens, a global leader in ghost kitchen real estate; Otter, a restaurant operating SaaS; and Lab37, a food robotics firm. Beyond food, the company has expanded into industrial automation through the acquisition of the mining automation startup Pronto, reflecting Kalanick's strategy of using capital as a competitive weapon to scale hardware and infrastructure.

Travis Kalanick

Travis Cordell Kalanick (; born August 6, 1976) is an American businessman best known as the co-founder and former chief executive officer (CEO) of Uber. Previously he worked for Scour, a peer-to-peer file sharing application company, and was the co-founder of Red Swoosh, a peer-to-peer content delivery network that was sold to Akamai Technologies in 2007. He is currently CEO of Atoms, which owns CloudKitchens, operator of ghost kitchens. Kalanick was CEO of Uber from 2010 to 2017. He resigned from Uber in 2017 after growing pressure from allegations that he ignored reports of sexual harassment at the company. Kalanick retained his seat on the board of directors until he gave it up on December 31, 2019. Before he resigned, Kalanick sold approximately 90% of his shares in Uber for $2.5 billion. Kalanick is ranked 374th on the Forbes 400 list of richest Americans, with a net worth of $3.6 billion. In 2018, Kalanick started the 10100 venture fund to invest in e-commerce, innovation and real estate in emerging markets such as China and India. That same year, Kalanick announced an investment of nearly $150 million in real estate redevelopment company City Storage Systems; he also announced that he would be its CEO.

  • City Storage Systems Emerges From Stealth At Food On Demand

After eight years of operating in “stealth mode,” CloudKitchens’ parent City Storage Systems (CSS) is making a bigger push to get in front of restaurateurs at conferences like RestaurantSpaces, Global Restaurant Leadership Conference, and just yesterday, Food On Demand Conference. “I don’t speak often in public,” admitted an earnest CEO Travis Kalanick to a crowd of captive technologists and operators. “We built under the radar, we built a lot of stuff, it’s time for us to start telling our story.” Kalanick was introduced by Food On Demand’s Jared Pfeifer as the founder behind three major entities under the CSS umbrella: CloudKitchens’ physical ghost kitchens, Otter’s delivery aggregator/mission control system, and Lab37’s kitchen automation solution. Kalanick, who is most famous for [...] automation solution. Kalanick, who is most famous for co-founding Uber a decade and a half ago, said CSS aligns with his professional mission of “digitizing the physical world.” Just as Uber captured 13% of all miles driven in San Francisco, CSS’ portfolio of online ordering tools and global portfolio of ghost kitchen real estate aims to do the same with food. With just under 2% of 300bn meals served in the US last year originating from online channels last year, Kalanick and his team naturally want to create a system that allows bits to catch up to atoms– the so-called “Internet Food Court” where food is highly personalized, as cheap as buying groceries, and comes in 10-15 minutes.
