Titan is the largest moon of Saturn and the second largest in the Solar System. It is the only moon that is known to have a dense atmosphere (denser than that of Earth), and is the only known object in the Solar System besides Earth with clear evidence of stable bodies of surface liquid. Titan is one of seven gravitationally rounded moons of Saturn, and is the second-most distant among them. Frequently described as a planet-like moon, Titan is 48.16% larger in diameter than Earth's moon, and 80% more massive. It is the second-largest moon in the Solar System after Jupiter's Ganymede "Ganymede (moon)"), and is larger than Mercury "Mercury (planet)"), and yet Titan is only 40% as massive as Mercury, because Mercury is mainly iron and rock, whereas Titan is mostly ice, which is less dense. [...] Titan is 5,149.46 km (3,199.73 mi) in diameter; it is 6% larger than the planet Mercury "Mercury (planet)") and 50% larger than Earth's Moon. Titan is the tenth-largest object known in the Solar system, including the Sun. Before the arrival of Voyager 1 in 1980, Titan was thought to be slightly larger than Ganymede "Ganymede (moon)"), which has a diameter of 5,268.2 km (3,273.5 mi), and thus the largest moon in the Solar System. This was an overestimation caused by Titan's dense, opaque atmosphere, with a haze layer 100–200 km above its surface. This increases its apparent diameter. Titan's diameter and mass (and thus its density) are similar to those of the Jovian moons Ganymede and Callisto "Callisto (moon)"). Based on its bulk density of 1.881 g/cm3, Titan's composition is 40–60% rock, [...] Discovered in 1655 by the Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens, Titan was the first known moon of Saturn and the sixth known planetary satellite (after Earth's moon and the four Galilean moons of Jupiter). Titan orbits Saturn at 20 Saturn radii or 1.2 million km above Saturn's apparent surface. From Titan's surface, Saturn, disregarding its rings, subtends an arc of 5.09 degrees, rendering it more than ten times as large in Titan's sky as the Moon is in Earth's sky.

In Greek mythology, the Titans (Ancient Greek: Τιτᾶνες, romanized: Tītnes; sing., Τιτάν, Tītā́n) were the deities who preceded the Olympians. According to the Theogony of Hesiod, they were the twelve children of the primordial deities Uranus "Uranus (mythology)") (Sky) and Gaia (Earth). The six male Titans were Oceanus, Coeus, Crius, Hyperion "Hyperion (Titan)"), Iapetus, and Cronus, and the six female Titans (called the Titanesses; Τιτανίδες, Tītānídes; sing., Τιτανίς, Tītānís) were Theia, Rhea "Rhea (mythology)"), Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe "Phoebe (Titaness)"), and Tethys "Tethys (mythology)"). [...] ## In astronomy [edit] The planet Saturn is named for the Roman equivalent of the Titan Cronus. Saturn's largest moon, Titan "Titan (moon)"), is named after the Titans generally, and the other moons of Saturn are named after individual Titans, specifically Tethys "Tethys (moon)"), Phoebe "Phoebe (moon)"), Rhea "Rhea (moon)"), Hyperion "Hyperion (moon)"), and Iapetus "Iapetus (moon)"). Astronomer William Henry Pickering claimed to have discovered another moon of Saturn which he named Themis "Themis (hypothetical moon)"), but this discovery was never confirmed, and the name Themis was given to an asteroid, 24 Themis. Asteroid 57 Mnemosyne was also named for the Titan. [...] According to Hesiod, the children of Uranus and Gaia were Oceanus, Coeus, Crius, Hyperion "Hyperion (Titan)"), Iapetus, Theia, Rhea "Rhea (mythology)"), Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe "Phoebe (Titaness)"), Tethys "Tethys (mythology)"), and Cronus. Among eight of the twelve Titans there were four marriages between brothers and sisters: Oceanus and Tethys, Coeus and Phoebe, Hyperion and Theia, and Cronus and Rhea. The other two Titans, Iapetus and Crius, married with familiars who were not their sisters. Iapetus married his niece Clymene "Clymene (wife of Iapetus)"), the daughter of Oceanus and Tethys, while Crius married his half-sister Eurybia "Eurybia (mythology)"), the daughter of Gaia and Pontus "Pontus (mythology)"). The other two Titanesses, Themis and Mnemosyne, married with their nephew

[...] [edit&action=edit§ion=1 "Edit section: Plot")] In 2048, on an Earth overpopulated and driven by violent conflicts, scientists are looking to Saturn's moon Titan "Titan (moon)") as a new home for humanity, spearheaded by Professor Martin Collingwood. Rick Janssen, a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, volunteers to be a part of an experiment on 14 test subjects that forces human bodies to adapt to the super-cold methane liquids and the ultra-low oxygen atmosphere of Titan. He is joined by his wife Abigail, a medical researcher, and their son Lucas, at the Titan I research area. The initial results are promising. Rick becomes able to swim at incredible speeds and stay underwater for 42 minutes. Meanwhile, Abigail befriends and comforts Rayenne, the wife of another volunteer, Zane.
- Titans & Titanesses | Theoi Greek Mythology
The Titans were an elder generation of gods who ruled the cosmos before the Olympians gods came to power. They were responsible for the original ordering of time and the establishment of fixed heavenly cycles. The eldest of the Titans--Cronos and his four brothers, Crius, Coeus, Hyperion and Iapetus--were imprisoned in the stormy pit of Tartarus by Zeus after he was victorious in the War. Many of the younger Titan gods, however, allied themselves with Zeus and retained their divine rights under the new regime. Some of these allies later proved to be rebellious and were sentenced to harsh punishments, such as Atlas who was condemned to bear the heavens, and Prometheus, who was chained to a rock and an eagle set to feed on his liver. [...] PROMETHEUS The Titan god of forethought and the creator and benefactor of man. He defied Zeus on several occasions, including tricking the gods out of the best share of the sacrificial meat, and stealing fire from heaven for the benefit of mankind. Zeus was furious, and had Prometheus chained to Mount Caucasus, where an eagle was set to devour his ever-regenerating liver. The Titan was eventually released from his tortures by Heracles. RHEA (Rheia) The Queen of the Titans and goddess of female fertility and the mountain wilds. She saved her son Zeus from the maw of Cronus by substituting the child for a stone wrapped in swaddling cloth. The Titan had devoured her other five children, but these were later freed from his beely by Zeus. SELENE The younger Titan-goddess of the moon. [...] THEIA The elder Titanis goddess of sight and the shining light of heaven ("aither"). She was the mother of Sun, Moon and Dawn. Her name is also connected with words meaning "foresight" and "prophecy". THEMIS The elder Titan-goddess of the natural order, divine law and tradition. She was also a goddess of the oracles of Dodona and Delphi. By Zeus she was the mother of the goddess Fates and of the Seasons, and had a seat by his side on Olympus as advisor. TITAN A Titan god who instructed mankind in the observation of the stars and establishment of the natural or farming calendar. He was perhaps the same as Atlas. ---
