  r/AskHistorians icon # "Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create..." Any real historical evidence support this argument? I know the statement has been rather popular in recent times, often used as a dog whistle in political arguments, but from an absolutely non-political standpoint: is this truly the case of our past civilizations and if so, is this a guaranteed cycle based on history or has there been civilizations that have evolved pass this? [...] I can think of a few civilizations, where we see this case happening, Roman Empire for one. However, I feel like that's an absolutely reductionist argument to make if we were to look at a similar civilization. There are a multitude of causes that could lead to "hard times" other than "tough men" creating "soft men" through a prolific period of "good times", in any civilization.
