Summary

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) movement, which traces its historical roots to the 1960s Civil Rights Movement and legislation like the Civil Rights Act of 1964, has recently become a major social and political lightning rod. While the industry saw explosive growth around 2019 and 2020 following national racial reckonings, it faced a significant backlash in 2023 and 2024. This shift was marked by the All-In Podcast naming the movement a 'political loser' of 2023 and prominent investors like Bill Ackman and Elon Musk publicly criticizing its implementation as discriminatory. The movement's practices were further challenged in 2024 by the satirical documentary 'Am I Racist?', which became the year's highest-grossing documentary by lampooning DEI training sessions and workshops.

DEI has its roots in the 1960's anti-discrimination legislative movement when laws like the Equal Pay Act of 1963, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 addressed labor issues based on protected classes.
