Summary
The Mac Mini is Apple's entry-level, small form factor desktop computer, first introduced in 2005 with the "BYODKM" (Bring Your Own Display, Keyboard, and Mouse) marketing strategy to attract Windows switchers. Over two decades, the device has transitioned through PowerPC and Intel architectures to Apple silicon, with the 2024 M4 redesign significantly reducing its footprint to a 5x5 inch enclosure. Beyond standard consumer use, it served as a server platform from 2009 to 2014 and is currently identified by Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas as a primary hardware platform for the "Perplexity Computer" to orchestrate local AI models. In a significant supply chain shift, Apple announced in February 2026 that production would partially move from Asia to a Foxconn facility in Houston, Texas.

Mac Mini (stylized as Mac mini) is a small form factor desktop computer developed and marketed by Apple. It is one of the company's four current Mac desktop computers, positioned as the entry-level consumer product, below the all-in-one iMac and the professional Mac Studio and Mac Pro. From its launch, the device has been sold without a display, keyboard, or mouse, and was originally marketed with the slogan "BYODKM" (Bring Your Own Display, Keyboard, and Mouse). This strategic pitch targeted current owners of Windows desktop computers; by leveraging peripherals users likely already owned, the computer offered a cost-effective way to switch to a Mac. In January 2005, the original Mac Mini was introduced with the PowerPC G4 CPU. In February 2006, Apple switched to an Intel Core Solo CPU. A thinner unibody redesign, unveiled in June 2010, added an HDMI port and was more readily positioned as a home theater device and an alternative to the Apple TV. The 2018 Mac Mini model had Thunderbolt, an Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 CPU, solid-state storage and replaces most of the data ports with USB-C. The Apple silicon Mac Mini based on the Apple M1 chip was introduced in November 2020; however Intel-based models remained available with more RAM options until the release of an updated model based on the M2 and M2 Pro chips in January 2023. In October 2024, Apple redesigned the Mac Mini for the first time since 2010. The new design is much smaller than previous models and features ports on the front and back of the device. The new design debuted with the M4 and M4 Pro chips, with the M4 Pro computers supporting Thunderbolt 5 for the first time. A server version of the Mac Mini that is bundled with the Server edition of the OS X operating system was offered from 2009 to 2014. The Mac Mini received generally tepid reviews except for the Apple silicon model, which was praised for its compatibility, performance, processor, price, and power efficiencies, though it drew occasional criticism for its ports, speaker, integrated graphics, non-user-upgradable RAM and storage. On February 23, 2026, Apple announced that it will move some production of its Mac Mini desktop computer to the U.S. from Asia, with new manufacturing effort will begin later this year at a Foxconn facility in north Houston.

The price of the Apple silicon Mac Mini dropped US$100 from that of the previous model to $699. It added support for Wi-Fi 6, USB4, and 6K video output to run the Pro Display XDR. Externally, it is very similar to the 2018 Mac Mini but has a lighter, silver finish similar to that of the models released from 2010 to 2014. The release of the Apple silicon Mac Mini was preceded by the June 2020 release of the A12Z-based Developer Transition Kit "Developer Transition Kit (2020)"), a prototype with a Mac Mini enclosure made for developers to port their apps to Apple silicon. The 2020 DTK has 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB of storage, and two USB-C ports. [...] The original Mac Mini was initially supplied with Mac OS X 10.3, then later with Mac OS X 10.4, and can run Mac OS 9 applications, as long as a bootable copy of the OS 9 system folder is installed from which to run the Classic environment (although the 2005 Mac Mini cannot natively boot to Mac OS 9). As of Mac OS X 10.5, the ability to run the Classic environment was removed. Later, Mac OS 9 was able to run on the 2005 Mac Mini through an unofficial patcher, though this was not supported by Apple. It is compatible with operating systems designed for the PowerPC architecture. Users can install the AmigaOS-compatible MorphOS, OpenBSD, and Linux distributions such as Debian and Ubuntu "Ubuntu (operating system)"). ### Technical specifications [edit] [...] The Intel-based Mac Mini includes four USB 2.0 ports and one FireWire 400 port. The I/O ports were changed with the early 2009 revision, adding a fifth USB 2.0 and swapping the FireWire 400 port for a FireWire 800 port. An infrared receiver was added, allowing the use of an Apple Remote. Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and 802.11g Wi-Fi became standard and the Ethernet port was upgraded to Gigabit. A built-in 56k modem was no longer available. The 2009 models added 802.11 draft-n and later 802.11n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth was upgraded from 2.0 to 2.1. External displays are supported through a DVI port. The 2009 models have Mini-DVI and Mini DisplayPort video output, allowing the use of two displays. The Mini DisplayPort supports displays with a resolution up to 2560×1600 at 60 Hz, which allows use of a 30

I’ve owned the Mac mini (2024) for a little over a year now, and I can confidently say it has been one of the best tech purchases I’ve made. Performance & Reliability The Mac mini is incredibly fast, smooth, and stable. It boots quickly, runs multiple applications without slowdown, and has been extremely reliable. I use it daily, and it performs just as well as it did on day one. It’s also been perfect for my kids’ online classes — no lag, no freezing, no random issues. That peace of mind alone makes it worth it. My Setup (Highly Recommend This Combo) I paired it with: • Dell P2723QE (4K USB-C Hub Monitor) • A high-end 4K Logitech webcam (the premium model — crystal-clear quality) Everything works seamlessly together. The display is sharp and vibrant, and the single USB-C connection keeps [...] "...as a mini server but will do so much it’s a true workhorse at an amazing value! Why I Chose Mac Mini Over iMac I’ve owned iMacs before, and while the all-in-one design is convenient, I personally prefer this modular setup. With the Mac mini: • You can upgrade your monitor anytime. • You can replace accessories independently. • You’re not locked into one screen. • It’s often significantly cheaper — especially if you catch a sale (which I did). This route gives you much more flexibility for a fraction of the cost in many cases. Longevity Based on performance so far, I genuinely believe this machine is future-proof for many years — easily 8–9 years depending on usage. Apple silicon machines are built to last,
- Definitive Guide to Buying a Mac mini (and NOT wasting money)
of the Mac Mini I've said Mac Mini far too many times already in this video there is the Bas spec with 16 gig of unified memory and a 256 gig SSD then there's one with with an upgrade to a 512 gig SSD and then there's the next one which is a 512 gig SSD but also an upgrade to 24 gig of unified memory and then lastly there is the M4 Pro Mac Mini which in addition to the more powerful M4 Pro chip starts with 24 gig of unified memory a 512 gig SSD and you also get Thunderbolt 5 on this model as well over the Thunderbolt 4 from the basic M4 so to get you started and this really applies to any Mac but of course we're focusing on the M4 Mac Mini here in this video so let's start with the memory because that is an area that many people often overs spend on like vastly overspend on because you [...] 2 yes with the silly USBC charging port underneath thing and all in all I am very happy with this decision although I would potentially upgrade the base SSD from 256 to 512 gig in future if I bought it again now the next Mac Mini is the Bas speec M4 Pro Mac Mini with 10 gig of ethernet 1 TB of storage and this was one that I bought for day-to-day work stuff here in the studio but I also wanted the pro chip in case I ever needed to do you know any video editing any audio editing work now since that's literally obviously what we do here that kind of makes sense and also just for Anytime my video editor needs to use this machine then I know that it's got a powerful enough chip to work on now I have this hooked up to the gigantic uh 57 in G9 Samsung screen via HDMI uh it's also hooked up into [...] often overs spend on like vastly overspend on because you know because it's sold it on we all worry that by not getting enough now we're going to make it really difficult for us later on when we realize we actually should have bought more memory now the basec M4 Mac Mini now comes with 16 gig of memory and for most home users this is just fine but it's actually what I went for with my M4 Mac Mini which I keep at home I do uh web browsing email writing documents even some like gaming as much as you can do on a Mac basically if you don't ever dive into anything outside of those basic tasks you don't really need more than 16 gig of memory I'm even using VMware to run a virtual machine on my home M4 Mac Mini which runs my home assistant like home automation system so they really are like

- Review: Apple's M4 Mac Mini is the Best Desktop Mac
The base Mac mini comes with an M4 chip, but there is an option to upgrade to the faster M4 Pro for those who need more power. The M4 models have three Thunderbolt 4 ports, but choosing the M4 Pro nets you three Thunderbolt 5 ports with faster transfer speeds. There are also two USB-C ports with 10Gb/s transfer speeds at the front of each machine. Compared to the prior-generation M2 Mac mini, the M4 models are up to 55 percent faster in terms of CPU speed. If you're looking for a desktop Mac, the base Mac mini is the best deal that you're going to get. The performance is more than enough for day to day tasks and even gaming, photo editing, and video editing, and that $599 price tag really can't be beat. Article Link: Review: Apple's M4 Mac Mini is the Best Desktop Mac [...] Priced starting at $599, the Mac mini offers the most affordable way to get access to Apple's new M4 chip, plus the machine got a design overhaul with the 2024 refresh. The Mac mini now measures in at 5 inches by 5 inches, and it's more than two inches smaller than the prior-generation model. It takes up much less space on a desk, and while it isn't quite as small as the Apple TV, it offers impressive performance in a super compact package.
