Summary
Jean-Luc Brunel was a prominent French model scout and entrepreneur who became a central figure in the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking scandal. He founded the international modeling agency Karin Models in 1977 and later co-founded MC2 Model Management with financing from Epstein. Brunel faced decades of allegations involving pimping, sexual assault, and the grooming of minors, notably being accused by Virginia Giuffre of procuring girls for Epstein's trafficking operation. Following Epstein's death in 2019, Brunel went into hiding but was eventually arrested in late 2020 at Charles de Gaulle Airport. He was being held in La Santé Prison on charges including the rape of minors and human trafficking when he died by suicide in February 2022, preventing his alleged victims from seeing him face trial.

Jean-Luc Didier Henri René Brunel (French: [ʒɑ̃ lyk didje ɑ̃ʁi ʁəne bʁynɛl], 18 September 1946 – 19 February 2022) was a French model scout and alleged sex trafficker. He gained prominence by leading the international modelling agency Karin Models, and founded MC2 Model Management with financing by Jeffrey Epstein. The subject of a 60 Minutes investigation in 1988, Brunel faced allegations of pimping and sexual assault spanning three decades. Brunel came under scrutiny for his ties to Epstein, with whom he worked from the early 2000s to 2015, after being introduced to him through Ghislaine Maxwell. He was accused by Virginia Giuffre of grooming girls including herself and of taking part in an alleged sex trafficking operation involving Epstein, but denied involvement in any illegal activities with Epstein. In 2019, the French National Police launched an investigation on Brunel after he went into hiding following Epstein's death. He was arrested on 16 December 2020, and French prosecutors charged him with the rape of minors. However, before his trial could proceed, Brunel "was found hanged in his cell", in La Santé Prison, conclusions regarding which await results of a formal investigation, but described by a prison officer union representative and Brunel's legal representation as a suicide. In the 2026 release of the Epstein files, Brunel was listed in a 2019 document as one of the people "the FBI once called co-conspirators" of Epstein.

Jean-Luc Brunel was found hanged in his cell in La Santé prison at 01:00 on Saturday, prosecutors told the BBC. The 76-year-old had been held for over a year as he was investigated on suspicion of the rape of minors and trafficking of minors for sexual exploitation. Brunel had denied any wrongdoing. Brunel's lawyers said he had been "crushed" by the allegations, and blamed a "media-judicial system". Brunel co-founded French modelling agency Karin Models in 1977, and MC2 Model Management in the US with funding from Epstein. [...] Brunel was detained at Paris's Charles de Gaulle airport in December 2020 as he was trying to board a flight to Senegal. His arrest was part of a French inquiry into sex trafficking and sexual assault allegations against Epstein, focusing on potential crimes committed against French victims and suspects who are French citizens. Prosecutors suspected Brunel of raping, sexually assaulting and sexually harassing multiple minors and adults. They also suspected him of transporting and housing young girls or young women for Epstein. Epstein was found dead in a New York prison in 2019 as he awaited trial over allegations he ran a network using underage girls for sex. A medical examiner ruled his death was suicide by hanging. Who was Jeffrey Epstein? [...] Who was Jeffrey Epstein? Epstein was already a convicted sex offender, having pleaded guilty to prostitution charges involving a minor in Florida in 2008. A frequent companion of Epstein, Brunel was considered key to the French probe into alleged sexual exploitation of women and girls by the financier and his circle. Brunel's alleged victims spoke of their disappointment at the news of his death. Dutch former model Thysia Huisman, who has said Brunel drugged and raped her when she was 18, told the BBC it was frustrating that his alleged victims would never have their day in court. "After more than two and a half years of fighting for justice, since I reported Brunel in September 2019, it's a huge disappointment he will never face a judge," she said.

Britain's Prince Andrew recently agreed to settle a case in which Giuffre accused him of sexual abuse when she was 17. Guiffre says she was supplied to Andrew by Epstein, charges that Andrew denies. The settlement, in which Andrew agreed to make a substantial donation to Giuffre's charity, avoids a trial. Jeffrey Epstein [...] Brunel, who was in his 70s, was detained at Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport in 2020 as part of a broad French probe unleashed by the U.S. sex-trafficking charges against Epstein. A frequent companion of Epstein, Brunel was considered central to the French investigation into alleged sexual exploitation of women and girls by the U.S. financier and his circle. Epstein traveled often to France and had apartments in Paris. Multiple women who identified themselves as victims have spoken to police since the French probe was opened in 2019, and at times expressed frustration with the slow pace of the investigation. One of them, Thysia Huisman, said the news of Brunel's death sent her into "shock." Enlarge this image [...] She expressed hope that Brunel's death won't discourage women from continuing to speak out about abuse. The investigation, along with a growing reckoning about sexual misconduct in France, has "freed up women to talk about it," she said. "It's a difficult step that requires a lot of courage and strength." One of Epstein's main accusers, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, has alleged that Brunel procured women, some of them minors, for sex with Epstein and other people, luring them with promises of modeling work.
